Window Hydroponic Gardens
By Vanessa Richins
It’s likely that you’ve heard about hydroponic gardens.
These allow people to grow plants without soil.
However, you might have thought that would be difficult to implement as an urban gardener.
Today, though, I discovered some pretty impressive plans for making your own hydroponic garden inside a sunny window. I found it on LifeHacker, who gave a link to the creators, WindowFarms. Their website announces that “Window Farms are vertical, hydroponic, modular, low-energy, high-yield edible window gardens built using low-impact or recycled local materials.”
I declare: Window Farms are awesome.
As I opened the PDF instructions that were available on their site, the first thing I noticed were all of the plastic bottles. The how-to calls for 1.5 liter water bottles. What a fantastic way to reuse all those bottles we seem to zoom through!
The bottles are connected in a row to a pair of reservoirs. A water pump is used to circulate the water. All in all, it looks pretty efficient.
Visit the website to find plans for creating your own window hydroponic gardens. They have plans, videos and forums. They have pictures of completed projects, as well as those still being built.
There are a couple of large windows in my living room. I need to check with my roommates to see if they would mind me setting up a couple of these “Window Farms”. If not, there’s always my own bedroom window. No matter what, I really want to create some window hydroponic gardens!
Have you made anything like this before? Will you now?

Wow! I am going to do this for a homeschooling project. I think this is going to be a really popular activity at our house- thanks, Vanessa!!!
