Plants vs Zombies

plants-vs-zombiesBy Vanessa Richins

I’ve been playing video games since I was a little girl - started back in the Intellivision days.

I was very excited, naturally, when I recently got the chance to review Plants vs. Zombies.

This is the newest game from PopCap.

The basic premise has you defending your house from a zombie invasion. How, you say? You have an arsenal of different fun plant types at your disposal. You plant them strategically to destroy the zombies and save yourself.

The 49 plant types are quite clever. For instance, you have to plant sunflowers to collect suns. You need to have a certain amount of suns collected to be able to use each type of plant. The names are quite punny - plant Cherry Bombs, and it will explode, killing any Zombies in the surrounding area. A Wall-Nut will act as a barrier to keep the zombies at bay while the other plants behind it can still fire away.

There are 50 different levels to go through in the main adventure, 26 different kinds of zombies, mini-games, puzzles, a zen garden and survival mode. You could find yourself trying to battle zombies at night, on the roof, or in the fog. It’s not too gory considering it’s zombies - limbs do fall off as the zombies are hit, but there isn’t any blood and the zombies are cartoonish.

I would highly recommend this game. I’ve already defeated the main adventure, but I still want to go back and do it again. I’ve been working through the puzzles and the survival mode. You can continue to earn coins to buy fancier plants and other useful items. I’ve been told that if I go back through the main adventure again, there will be added bonuses and challenges.

Have you played Plants vs. Zombies?

My kids and I have enjoyed this game a lot. The minigames extend the life of this game beyond what you usually have with a casual game.
