There’s a Garden Where my Weeds Used to Be!

garden11By Michael Nolan

I guess I should preface this post by saying hi to everyone and apologizing for taking so long to return to my roots here at Urban Garden Casual.

I’ve missed everyone!

Now on with the show…

This little plot of crab grass and weeds may not look like much to you, but to me it represented a return to getting my hands dirty and turning an otherwise useless piece of ground into something beautiful and useful. See, this is what I saw when I prepared to move into my new home in Atlanta.

Thankfully my partner shares my love for the outdoors and the rewards that hard work can yield there, so working together we were able to transform this small plot into a great planting bed that is now home to a Japanese Maple, azaleas, a Japanese pencil tree and a great blue birdbath to keep our fine feathered friends happy in the coming warm months.

garden21You may be able to see that the planting bed extends down the side of the house as well and yes, we did complete the job all the way down. As soon as the temperatures permit, that area will be home to three great tomato seedling plants that are currently occupying several pots that allow me to bring them indoors when the temps drop down to the freezing mark (which I still can’t believe happens in this part of the country in April).

That’s how I got my 2009 growing season started since I got off to a late start and was unable to start my own vegetables from seed. Don’t get me wrong folks, in the coming weeks this yard is going to be covered with beautiful growing edibles to complement the flowering beauty that we already put into place!

Very Curious…is the dead grass kind of like the mulch?

I’m not sure what you’re asking. The grass wasn’t dead it was dormant so it would have sprouted again had we left it in place.
