Radio Show Offers Rock Music and Gardening Advice

radioBy Vanessa Richins

Gardening advice shows on the radio aren’t uncommon.

In Utah, I sometimes listen to KSL 1160 am, which features shows called, “The KSL Greenhouse Show.”

There’s also, “Joy in the Garden” on KNRS 570 am.

However, one radio show from Augustana College (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) features an interesting combination - gardening, indie rock and traditional folk-based music.

The Djs, dubbed “Flower Man & Oil Can,” dole out gardening advice while showcasing songs.

If you happen to live in Southeastern South Dakota, catch the show live on Thursday nights from 8-10 pm. Otherwise, they have the shows available as podcasts on their website.

As their one-line bio proclaims, they want the show to be, “Less talk, more witty banter about gardening.”

An article in the Argus Leader explains how one of the hosts, Ted Hereen, came up for the idea for a gardening rock show. “Heeren, who is a co-owner of advertising firm Fresh Produce in Sioux Falls, says the idea for the show came through life experience.  Heeren grew up on a farm near Beresford and says his interests varied growing up - he was a theater, broadcast journalism and horticulture major in college.”

I was much amused by the names of their podcasts, which include:

Rock Garden Tour Podcast 15: Slippery When Weeding!

Rock Garden Tour Podcast 14: Pour Some Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide On Me!

Rock Garden Tour Podcast 13: Heirloom Seeds (Charles Ingalls) vs. Hybrid Seeds (A.C. Slater)

Rock Garden Tour 11 Part 1: You want the squash? You can’t handle the squash.

They all sound quite fun, really - I can’t wait to listen to them. I hope you’ll be listening too!

What a novel idea. They have music, gardening and a sense of humor. You can’t go wrong with that combination.

I’ll be listening soon. Thanks for the links.
